Jenna had agreed the night before, but by the next morning in church, it was anything but easy to act like the trip was going to be no-big-deal. Her mother seemed to think it quite natural and didn’t so much as question more than what day she was leaving and when would she be back. It was Faithe who saw the big, red flags Jenna was really hoping to hide.

“You know, not to put a damper on this or anything,” Faithe said as she bounced Cason to resettle him on her hip, “but are you sure you’re up for this trip?”

It would have been nice if Jenna was better at lying or at least not grimacing when she did. “It’s just a couple of days,” she said, but her gaze did not stay at all steady.

Faithe nodded, but her face went dour. She looked on the verge of voicing her real opinion right then and there, but with one glance around, she chose a different tack. “How was the grief thing on Tuesday?”

Jenna’s gaze fell again to her shoes and stuck there. “Oh. Uh…”

How Faithe could look so very disappointed, Jenna had no way of knowing, but she could sense that look without even seeing it. “You didn’t…” Faithe broke that off, sighed, and let her gaze also fall to the white and gray tiles at their feet. Finally she shook her head. “Well, are you going to go this week?”

Oh, to be able to say no and make that stick. Jenna shook her head in frustration. “I don’t know, Faithe. I’ve got packing to do and getting the house ready…”

“How ready does the house possibly need to be? It’s not like you’re putting it on sale or anything.” However, that stopped her again, and Faithe’s eyes went wide. “You’re not, are you?”

A wisp of true anger brushed across Jenna. “No. I’m not. I told you, it’s just for a couple of days.”

“Then surely you can go one night. Come on. It’s just a couple of hours.”

Going was the very last thing Jenna wanted to do, but finally she put her head down and nodded. “Fine. I’ll go.”

“Okay. Good. Then I’ll pick you up Tuesday about 6:15.”

Jenna fought to smile, but it didn’t work very well. “K. I’ll be ready.”
